ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team turned a 15-point halftime lead into a 24-point victory over Shepherd, 80-56, Thursday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
The Mountain Lions (9-3, 5-2, MEC) held a 24-19 lead through one quarter after junior forward
Madison May beat the first-period buzzer with a three-pointer. CU was able to continue the surge through the first six minutes of the second quarter as it outscored Shepherd (5-8, 2-5 MEC) 13-2 during that particular stretch. Five different players contributed during the run with sophomore forward
Tamra Scott scoring four points.
At halftime, Concord led 41-26.
Concord built its lead up to 23 points, 53-30, after a fast break layup from freshman guard
Gracie Robinson at the 4:27 mark of the third quarter. The Rams chipped away at the CU lead, and worked it down to 16 points, 59-43, early in the fourth quarter. However, senior guard
Andreanna Pool knocked down a jumper and fellow senior guard
Emily Boothe added a corner three-pointer to extend the lead back above 20 as the Maroon and Gray went on to by 24 points.
May led all scorers with 25 points on 11-for-14 shooting to go along with a game-best 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater had her own 20-point double-double as she went for 20 points and 11 rebounds while adding three blocks. Fitzwater finished the game going 9-for-14 from the floor.
The senior backcourt of Boothe and Pool combined for 19 points--with Pool scoring 14 of those points—10 rebounds and five assists. Boothe did a little bit of everything for CU as she pulled in seven rebounds and added three steals.
The Mountain Lions shot 55.6 percent (35-for-63) for the game and also outrebounded the Rams 45-38. Defensively, Concord limited SU to 33.3 percent (21-for-63) shooting, the fourth straight game holding an opponent under 35 percent from the field.
CU goes for its fifth straight win when it takes on Fairmont State at the Carter Center 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
