ATHENS, W.Va. -- The Concord University women's basketball team picked up its ninth straight win as it held off a fourth quarter fury from UVa.-Wise to win 73-67 Saturday afternoon at the Carter Center.
Even though Concord (14-3, 10-2 MEC) trailed in the first quarter, it was able to grab the lead with just under five minutes left in the first quarter when junior forward
Madison May made a defensive rebound and assisted sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater with a layup, putting CU ahead, 9-7. CU lead UVa.-Wise (8-10, 6-6 MEC) into the second quarter, 14-9.
UVa.-Wise made a couple attempts to take the lead back from Concord before halftime, but Concord went on an 8-0 run to open up a 28-16 lead on the Cavaliers. Sophomore forward
Keely Lundy and May combined for five of the eight points. Over the remaining three minutes of the first half, UVa.-Wise cut CU's lead to four, but Concord took a 31-24 halftime lead.
The surge continued in the third quarter as Concord ran its lead up to 13 two different times with the final time occurring after a sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater layup to give Concord a 55-42 edge.
The run was aided with help of two three-pointers from sophomore guard
Savannah Dunford.
Beginning the fourth quarter up 12 points, CU's lead dropped down to just a six point advantage. And the Cavaliers took a brief lead 63-62, but a basket from May and a three-pointer from senior guard
Andreanna Pool gave CU a four point lead with less than three minutes to go.
Senior guard
Emily Boothe, Pool, and Fitzwater combined for six made foul shots under the three minute mark of the contest as Concord held on for a six point win.
Fitzwater led the Mountain Lions with 19 points and 13 rebounds, combining for her ninth double-double of the season.
Pool added 17 points, and May chipped in 11. Boothe tallied 10 rebounds.
CU welcomes Bluefield State to the Carter Center 5:30 p.m. Monday.
