ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team defeated UVa.-Wise in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-18) Tuesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.
Concord improves to 4-15 this season as it picked up its first MEC win of the season (1-3) with the victory. UVa.-Wise drops to 3-13 overall and 1-4 versus conference foes.
The Mountain Lions got off to a hot start as they scored 14 of the first 20 points of the match. Six different Concord players had a kill during the stretch with senior outside hitter
Ellie Lawrence coming up with two. CU expanded its lead to as much as 19-8 after a service ace by junior setter
Jenna Mounts as it went on to win the first game by 11 points.
Concord got off to another fast start in the second game as it opened the set on a 12-4 spurt that concluded on a kill from senior outside hitter
Alexi Pranckus. Lawrence added two more kills during the run as well. The closest the Cavaliers could get in the game was six points, but a kill from freshman right side
Camryn Huber and a ball handling error on UVa.-Wise immediately grew the Concord advantage back to eight points, 14-6, as it cruised to a nine-point second-set victory.
After CU jumped out to a 7-2 start in the third game—on a kill from freshman middle hitter
Sheridan Herron—UVa.-Wise raced back to cut the deficit to 11-9. However, the Concord lead was not threatened anymore as the Mountain Lions scored three of the next four points including a kill each from senior middle hitter
Brooke Heck and Pranckus. Concord took a 14-10 edge and took the set, 25-18.
Heck and Lawrence each had nine kills in the match. Heck finished with a hitting percentage of .615 while Lawrence hit .500.
Pranckus went over 1,000 digs for her career as she tallied seven kills and eight digs on the night. Huber added eight kills and six total blocks for CU.

Imani Rodgers notched 19 assists while Mounts racked up 18 assists.
After a weekend off from competition, Concord takes to the road Thursday, October 4 to face Urbana followed by Notre Dame October 5.
