Concord Edged by Charleston in Four Sets

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team was unable to carry its first-win set momentum over to the next three games as it fell to Charleston 23-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-16, Tuesday night in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.

Charleston (5-9, 1-0 MEC) was able to take a 14-10 lead in the first set after five straight points, and continued to lead 21-19 in the set. However, the Mountain Lions (2-15, 0-3 MEC) went on a 6-2 run to end the set and grab a 1-0 lead in the match.

Freshman right side Camryn Huber added a kill and a block during the spurt while senior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus finished off the set with a kill.

After a kill from freshman middle hitter Sheridan Herron put CU up 7-5 in the second set, the Golden Eagles rolled off five straight points to take command of the set and even up the match at 1-1.

A 6-0 run from Charleston in the third set gave it an 18-13 lead. Trailing 23-19 in the third game, senior outside hitter Ellie Lawrence provided a kill while sophomore libero Lindsay Maddox came up with a service to ace to draw Concord within 24-23 of UC, but the game's next point belonged to UC as it took a 2-1 edge in the match.

Down 19-14 in the fourth set, Lawrence tallied one of her team-high 10 kills in the match to get the Mountain Lions within four of Charleston, however, UC reeled off a 6-1 run to end the match.

Lawrence added a hitting percentage of .300 to go along with her 10 kills. Huber recorded six kills and eight total blocks in the loss. Pranckus went for eight kills and eight digs.
