Concord Drops Match at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team fell in four sets to Glenville State Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action inside the Waco Center. 
 
Glenville State (5-5, 1-1 MEC) won the first two sets 25-22 and 25-19 before the Mountain Lions (2-14, 0-2 MEC) won the third set 25-22. But, GSC rebounded to win the fourth set 25-20. 
 
The Pioneers opened up a 16-12 advantage that wrapped up a 9-5 run after a tightly contested beginning to the first set. CU scored the next point after a kill from senior outside hitter Ellie Lawrence, but was unable to get any closer in the first game. 
 
GSC raced out to a 14-6 edge in the second game. After three straight errors by Glenville State, the Maroon and Gray was able to close within 21-16, but Glenville State closed out the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. 
 
CU gained some momentum back in the third set as it led 12-8 after a service ace from freshman defensive specialist Kelli Ellison. However, Glenville State stormed back to gain a 19-18 lead as well as a 22-20 advantage. Facing a sweep, the Mountain Lions answered with the last five points of the set. Two points came on kills from freshman middle hitter Sheridan Herron while the Jonesville, Virginia native also served up an ace to close out the set. 
 
The fourth game was evenly played as the first 20 points of the set were split between the two teams. GSC scored three of the next four points to lead 13-11, but Concord answered by tying the match at 14-14. It would be the last tie of the set as the Pioneers went on a 7-2 run to close out CU. 
 
Lawrence finished with a team-best nine kills while senior middle hitter Brooke Heck had eight kills and a hitting percentage of .500. 
 
Freshman setter Imani Rodgers notched a career-best 25 assists. Herron and freshman right side Camryn Huber each added seven kills. 
 
CU hosts Charleston 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
