BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Concord University volleyball team eased its way to a season-opening victory over King as it won 5-0 Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.
Freshman forward
Leah Foster recorded a hat trick while senior forward
Pilar Elias scored the other two goals and added an assist for the Mountain Lions (1-0). Foster's first goal was the only score of the first half as the Wigan, England native slotted a goal past King goalkeeper Lindsey Dunham 14 minutes into the contest.
KU was able to keep Concord off the scoreboard until two scores within four minutes of each other in the second half. Elias tallied her first goal in the 58
th minute as she slid a shot past Dunham on a pass from sophomore midfielder
Mira Kontio. In the 62
nd minute, Foster took a pass to the middle of the field from sophomore midfielder
Yasmin Mosby to score her second goal of the game.
Foster completed her hat trick in the 87
th minute as Elias served a ball into the 18-yard penalty area where Foster put the shot past Dunham in the lower left corner. The final goal came in the 90
th minute as Elias struck the post with a shot before finding the back of the net to give CU its final margin of victory, 5-0.
Foster became the first Concord player to post a hat trick since Elias' three-goal game against Wheeling Jesuit October 18, 2017. Along with her two goals, Elias added an assist on Foster's final goal.
Freshman forward
Kaitlyn Kerrigan recorded her first collegiate point by assisting on Elias' second goal.
Thursday afternoon was a quiet one for the Concord defense. Sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Maher had to make one save as the CU defense limited King to five total shots.
The Mountain Lions fired 17 shots with 13 of those being on target.
CU hosts Felician in its home opener 1:00 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Field.
