Concord Drops Match at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Concord University volleyball team lost in three sets to Clarion Thursday night in the first match of the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament.

CU (1-6) lost 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 to the Golden Eagles (3-2).

In the first set, Concord trailed 10-5 earlier on, but a kill from senior outside hitter Ellie Lawrence got CU to within 10-6. However, Clarion reeled off a 5-2 run to open up a 15-8 lead on its way to an eight-point first set win.

The Golden Eagles scored 10 of the first 13 points of the second set, but the Mountain Lions proceeded to go on a 5-1 run to trim the deficit to 11-8. Freshman right side Camryn Huber and senior outside hitter Alexi Pranckus each had a kill during the spurt. But Clarion answered with consecutive points, and the Maroon and Gray could not get closer than four points for the remainder of the second game.

In the final set, five ties highlighted the early rallies. Knotted at 13-13, the Golden Eagles went on a brief 5-1 scoring spurt to open up the gap they needed to win the third game by eight.

Lawrence and Pranckus each had five kills to lead Concord. Junior setter Jenna Mounts had nine assists and seven digs. Sophomore libero Lindsay Maddox had eight digs to pace the Mountain Lions.

CU plays two matches at the Tony Banner Memorial Tournament on Friday against Ursuline (4:30 p.m.) and Gannon (7:00 p.m.)
