Concord's Season Ends Versus Shepherd

BECKLEY, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team was eliminated from the Mountain East Conference Tournament Friday afternoon at Epling Stadium with a 14-5 loss to Shepherd.

SU (36-13) scored 11 straight runs with two outs in the third inning to pull away from the Mountain Lions (26-23).

Shepherd led 1-0 after one inning on a solo home run, and sophomore pitcher Trent Abernathy (5-1), who was charged with the loss, worked his way out of a jam in the second after the Rams had runners on second and third with one out, but did not score.

After two quick outs by Abernathy in the third, SU had 12 straight batters reach and scored 11 runs.

Concord scored three runs in the fourth as junior infielder Trevor Wiersma and junior outfielder Evan Webb ripped back-to-back doubles to right center field and junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark hit a two-run home run.

Later in the seventh, Clark led off the frame with his second home run of the game, his first multi-home run game of the season.

Abernathy allowed seven runs in 2.2 innings. Sophomore pitcher Bryson Booher and freshman utility Anthony Stehlin each struck out for Shepherd hitters in relief.
Clark and Webb each had two hits.

Friday marked the final collegiate game for pitcher Cody Dooley, pitcher Reece Edwards, infielder Chad Frazier, infielder Adrian Peralta, Wiersma and senior catcher Paul Williams.

Frazier finishes his career ranked top 10 in all-time hits, runs scored, stolen bases and walks. The Roanoke, Virginia native became the third player in school history with 200 hits and 200 runs scored with a run scored Friday.

Edwards concludes his career as one of five players in school history with at least 50 pitching appearances. Wiersma finished 10th in career home runs at CU with 20 while Williams notched career hit 222—ninth all-time in school history—with a base knock.
