Concord Drops Two at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team fell in a pair of games to West Virginia State, 6-0 and 13-5, Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Cal Bailey Field.

Game 1: West Virginia State 6 – Concord 0
CU (14-12, 8-6 MEC) was limited by West Virginia State's (16-11, 7-7 MEC) Hunter Bradley in the first game as Bradley surrendered just three hits.

The Yellow Jackets got two runs in the second and third to open up a 4-0 advantage and plated a pair of runs in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

Junior pitcher Troy Beckner (4-3) was charged with the loss as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits while striking out three.

Junior infielder Adrian Peralta, junior outfielder Evan Webb and junior infielder Trevor Wiersma accounted for Concord hits.

Game 2: West Virginia State 13 – Concord 5
WVSU raced out to a 10-1 lead through four innings, and never let the Mountain Lions get closer than five in the nightcap.

After West Virginia State scored 10 of the game's first 11 runs, CU strung together a rally in the top of the fifth.

With sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous on base, senior infielder Chad Frazier hit a two-run home run. Two batters later, Webb followed with his own two-run home run that brought in senior catcher Paul Williams. However, 10-5 was as close as the Mountain Lions would get as WVSU tallied three runs in the sixth.

Frazier and Webb each had two RBI while Webb and Williams had two hits apiece.

Freshman utility Anthony Stehlin (2-4) was tagged with the loss. Stehlin pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on seven hits and striking out four.

The teams resume the four-game series 1:00 p.m. Friday at West Virginia State.
