MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
Concord went 2-2 in its four-game homestand against Charleston and West Virginia State as it split a doubleheader with each school.
Versus Charleston, sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick tossed her second shutout of the season and the third of her career as CU held off the Golden Eagles, 1-0, in game one of the twinbill.
Concord also won game one against West Virginia State, 5-2, as sophomore utility
Amber Stokes and sophomore second baseman / shortstop
Jenna Witt each homered in the contest. Witt smacked her fifth home run of the season in the first inning while Stokes added her second homer in as many weekends in the fourth.
Witt is tied for second in the MEC in home runs while she leads the conference in doubles with 11.
Also in the Mountain Lions' win over WVSU, freshman catcher / outfielder
Kayle Starnes recorded her second career extra-base hit, a two-RBI double that added some insurance to the CU lead.
Junior outfielder
Abby Beatty tallied her fourth home run of 2018 with a solo shot in the sixth inning of game two versus Charleston that tied the game, 3-3, before UC won 6-3. For Beatty, it was also her 14th career home run which gets her to within four of tying Ashley Jackson, Crystal Kestner and
Lacey McDougall for third on the all-time home runs list at CU.
Last season, the Mountain Lions split four games with UVa.-Wise as each team swept a home doubleheader from the other. Concord edged the Cavaliers 1-0 and 2-0 at home. CU limited UVa.-Wise to five runs in the four contests last season.
Seven of the last eight games between the teams have been decided by two runs or less.
In 2017, the Maroon and Gray went 3-1 on its road trip to West Liberty and Wheeling Jesuit.
CU swept the Hilltoppers 4-2 and 6-4.
In game one, sophomore pitcher / first baseman
Rachel Pritchard and Fitzpatrick combined to limit West Liberty to two runs. Pritchard earned the win in the circle while Fitzpatrick tallied her only career save to date by tossing 1.1 scoreless innings.
Beatty powered the offense in the sweep by going 4-for-7 with two runs scored, a home run and four RBI.
After falling in game one to Wheeling Jesuit last season, Beatty was responsible for the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of game two. Beatty singled in senior catcher / outfielder
Chelsea Shepherd with two outs to push CU ahead 3-2. In the particular sequence, Shepherd was pinch running for junior infielder
Kylie Kent who doubled with two outs to start the late rally.
