Concord Uses Big Third Inning to Defeat Ohio Valley

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored all six of its run in the third inning as it downed Ohio Valley 6-2 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Anderson Field.

Sophomore infielder Jakob Divers got the Mountain Lions (21-17) on the board in the third inning as he sent his first career home run over the right field fence to give CU a 3-0 lead. Junior infielder Brett Simmons and junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark had both singled in front of Divers to start the frame.

The rally continued for Concord as senior infielder Chad Frazier walked before moving to third on an error. With Frazier at third and sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous at second, senior catcher Paul Williams lined a single back through the middle to score both runs. Two batters later, Williams scored on a two-out error to cap the scoring for CU in the third.

Concord's pitching staff threw up eight zeros on the scoreboard with Ohio Valley scoring both of its runs in the sixth inning. Sophomore pitcher Bryson Booher allowed just one hit and struck out three in his first collegiate start that went three innings. Freshman pitcher Logan Morrison, Linkous and sophomore infielder Nathan Neff all had a strikeout in their outings as all three tossed one inning.

Sophomore pitcher McKinley Scott, junior pitcher Noah Tucker and junior pitcher James Wood all pitched one inning for the Mountain Lions. Morrison (2-1) was credited with the win as he pitched a scoreless fifth inning while giving up just one hit and tallying the strikeout.

Collectively, CU limited Ohio Valley to just four hits on the afternoon.

Divers and Williams each had two hits and the duo combined for all five of Concord's RBI. Divers drove in three runs while Williams had two RBI.

The Mountain Lions start a four-game weekend series with Charleston 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Anderson Field.
