ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split its doubleheader with Glenville State Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.
CU fell in game one 8-5 before bouncing back to take the series finale 11-3, and win the series 3-1. The Mountain Lions improve to 20-17 overall and 14-10 in the MEC. Glenville State drops to 13-25 this season and 10-14 in the conference.
Game 1: Glenville State 8 – Concord 5
GSC scored four runs in the first inning to grab an early lead and held off Concord's mid-game rally.
Senior infielder
Chad Frazier scored on a fielder's choice in the first inning to get CU on the board before the Pioneers answered with three runs in the top of the fourth.
Down by six runs, junior outfielder
Evan Webb led off the bottom of the frame with his fifth home run of the season, and Concord added two runs on an RBI double from sophomore infielder
Jakob Divers and a run-scoring hit from Frazier. However, Glenville State was able to escape further damage on a close play at first base that avoided the tying run reaching base.
GSC grabbed an insurance run to open up an 8-4 advantage in the sixth, but the Mountain Lions came right back with their own score on a base hit from senior catcher
Paul Williams that brought in Frazier.
Concord, though, was unable to get any closer in the contest as Glenville State's Jose Rodriguez faced the minimum in the seventh.
Frazier led CU with three hits including two doubles on the day. Sophomore outfielder
Adam Linkous and Williams each had two hits with Williams adding two RBI.
Junior pitcher
Will Guay (2-5) was charged with the defeat as he gave up five earned runs while striking out seven in 3.2 innings.
Game 2: Concord 11 – Glenville State 3
The Mountain Lions erased a 1-0 second-inning deficit as they outscored GSC 11-2 in the final five innings.
The first two Concord runs came across in the third on a single from sophomore
Nathan Neff that pushed CU in front 2-1.
After a Glenville State sacrifice fly tied the game 2-2 in the fourth, Divers came through with a two-run single that allowed junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark and junior infielder
Brett Simmons to touch home.
It appeared the Pioneers might take control of the contest in the top of the fifth. With a run already in and the bases loaded, senior pitcher
Reece Edwards induced an inning-ending double play to keep CU in front 4-3.
By not allowing Glenville State to tie the game, the Mountain Lions were able to add some insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Clark lined a run-scoring single into left field, and Divers tallied his third and fourth RBI of the day with a two-run double as Concord opened up a 7-3 edge.
Junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma was in the middle of the four-run sixth for the Maroon and Gray as he launched his fifth home run of the season—a two-run shot over the right field fence.
Divers and Simmons each had two hits in the nightcap. Divers added four RBI while Neff notched three hits.
Freshman utility
Anthony Stehlin earned his third win of the season as he tossed the first four innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out two. Edwards recorded his second save of the season as he pitched the final three innings.
