FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games to Fairmont State, 14-9 and 8-5, Friday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Duvall-Rosier Field.
Game 1: Fairmont State 14 – Concord 9
FSU (17-17, 13-7 MEC) scored the final 10 runs of the contest after the Mountain Lions (12-18, 9-11 MEC) jumped out to a five-run lead through two innings.
Senior third baseman
Alycea Watson powered a four-run first inning as she launched a three-run home run that scored sophomore first baseman / pitcher
Rachel Pritchard and sophomore utility
Amber Stokes. CU's first run of the game also came on a home run as junior outfielder
Abby Beatty homered two batters into the contest.
Down 4-0, Fairmont State matched Concord's rally with four scores of its own in the bottom of the first. However, the Mountain Lions broke out for five runs in the next half inning.
Sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick tripled home freshman catcher / third baseman
Kaitlyn Stewart after she walked to start the rally. Fitzpatrick touched home herself with a sacrifice fly from sophomore second baseman / shortstop
Jenna Witt. With runners on second and third, Watson doubled home two more runs to push CU's lead to 8-4 before freshman catcher / outfielder
Kayle Starnes scored Watson on a single.
The Fighting Falcons added a run in the third before a four-run fourth tied the contest at 9-9. FSU took its first lead of the game in the fifth by plating two and tacked on three runs in the sixth.
Junior first baseman
Lauren Blunt, Starnes and Watson each had two hits. Watson drove in five runs.
Despite giving up just three earned runs, Pritchard was charged with the loss as she went five innings and struck out three batters.
Game 2: Fairmont State 8 – Concord 5
Fairmont State rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the fifth inning to win the nightcap.
FSU scored the first two runs on the contest in a two-run second inning. Watson was able to trim the deficit in half in the third as her base hit brought in Pritchard.
The Fighting Falcons hung onto the one-run edge until the fifth when Watson was in the middle of another CU rally. With runners on first and second and one out, the New Castle, Delaware native smacked her second three-run home run of the doubleheader to push Concord in front 4-2.
But, Fairmont State had an answer in the bottom of the fith. Beth Cook blasted a grand slam with two outs in the frame as FSU regained a 6-4 lead.
Freshman outfielder
Dani Bloomingdale raced home after a lead single in the sixth, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions would get in the nightcap.
Watson finished the doubleheader by going 4-for-8 with three runs scored, two home runs, nine RBI and a double.
Fitzpatrick and Pritchard added two hits each in game two.
Freshman pitcher
Tara Williams (1-2) tied her career high with five strikeouts over six innings.
CU continues its road trip at Shepherd 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
