Concord Drops Doubleheader at Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost two games to Shepherd, 3-0 and 11-4, Saturday afternoon at the SU Softball Field in Mountain East Conference action.

Game 1: Shepherd 3 – Concord 0
The Mountain Lions (12-20, 9-13 MEC) were held to five hits by Shepherd's Kaitlin Munda in game one of the doubleheader.

SU (25-11, 16-6 MEC) scratched across a run in the second inning, but senior catcher / outfielder Chelsea Shepherd and sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt combined to throw out a run at home plate on an attempted double steal by the Rams to keep the deficit at 1-0.

After a scoreless third, Shepherd pushed two more runs home on an RBI double in the fourth, extending the advantage to 3-0.

Over Concord's final three at-bats, it was unable to get a runner into scoring position.

Witt finished with three hits in game one for the Mountain Lions. Junior first baseman Lauren Blunt and freshman catcher / outfielder Kayle Starnes each had a hit in the opener.

Sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Pritchard was the losing pitcher as she struck out two and allowed three runs in 3.2 innings.

Game 2: Shepherd 11 – Concord 4
Concord came out swinging in game two as it scored the game's first four runs, but could not hold off the Rams in the middle innings.

Senior third baseman Alycea Watson and Witt got the scoring started for the Mountain Lions as each scored on separate wild pitches to push CU in front 2-0 in the first inning. With runners on second and third after the erratic pitches, sophomore utility Amber Stokes ripped a two-out, two run double down the left field line to stretch the lead out to 4-0.

Shepherd tied the game in the second with four runs and plated four additional runs in the third to grab an 8-4 lead on its way to the victory.

Starnes and Stokes each had a double in the game with Stokes adding two RBI and an additional single. Watson and Witt each had a hit, but were on base three times each as both drew a pair of walks. Each player also stole a base in the contest.

Concord hosts UVa.-Wise in a Wednesday MEC matinee with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
