Concord Loses to Lake Erie

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped the opening game of its weekend series to Lake Erie, 9-5, Friday afternoon at Anderson Field.

CU (4-6) was unable to rally from an early 6-1 deficit as the Storm (2-6-1) scored five runs in the third inning to take control of the game.

Senior infielder Chad Frazier scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning on a LEC error. However, Lake Erie answered with a score in the top of the second and crossed home plate five times in the third that included two, two-RBI singles and a bases loaded walk.

The Mountain Lions were able to get back within four runs after back-to-back doubles from junior outfielder Evan Webb and junior infielder Adrian Peralta in the fourth inning.

Out of the bullpen, sophomore pitcher Trent Abernathy kept Lake Erie off the scoreboard in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning to keep the game 6-2 in favor of the Storm. CU's offense produced a score in the bottom of the seventh as Frazier came in on junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark's single into left field.

But an error on CU sparked a rally from LEC in the eight as it was able to open back up a six-run advantage, 9-3. The Mountain Lions came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame on a base hit by sophomore infielder Jakob Divers and a fielder's choice RBI from sophomore outfielder Ryan Fralin.

After holding Lake Erie scoreless in the ninth, Concord loaded the bases in its last at-bat, but was unable to score any runs to cut the deficit.

Divers, Peralta, Webb and senior catcher Paul Williams all had two hits with a double in the game. Webb also scored two runs.

Junior pitcher Troy Beckner (1-2) tossed two innings in his start giving up two runs and striking out four batters. Abernathy threw a career-best five innings in his relief appearance, striking out four batters and allowing one earned run.

The Mountain Lions and the Storm resume the series 12:00 p.m. Saturday. However, start times to the games may occur with impending weather.
