ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team lost a doubleheader to Ohio Valley at Anderson Field Saturday afternoon.
OVU (8-4) won 5-3 and 9-5 as it earned two comeback wins over Concord (4-5).
Game 1: Ohio Valley 5 – Concord 3
Ohio Valley scored five straight runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take control of the contest.
The Mountain Lions got on the board first in the third inning with a two-out triple from senior infielder
Chad Frazier that plated sophomore infielder
Nathan Neff.
In its next at-bat, CU added a second run with senior catcher
Paul Williams scoring from first on a two-out, dropped fly ball.
OVU answered with two runs in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly and a two-out single, and scored three more times in the sixth to grab a 5-2 edge.
Concord put together a rally in the bottom of the frame as Williams and junior infielder
Adrian Peralta both reached base with one out. Sophomore infielder
Jakob Divers punched a single through the right side of the infield to score Williams and trim the deficit to 5-3. However, it was close as CU would get in the game.
Junior pitcher
Troy Beckner started the game as he struck out six batters in 4.2 innings of work while allowing two earned runs on five hits. Fellow junior pitcher
Will Guay (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. Guay fanned four OVU hitters in 2.1 innings.
Game 2: Ohio Valley 9 – Concord 5
The Mountain Lions could not hold off a Fighting Scots rally in the middle innings after building an early 4-0 lead.
Junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark and Williams came up with RBI base hits in the first inning as five of the first six CU batters reached base to start the game. After William's run-scoring hit, Peralta came up with a two-RBI single to bring around Clark and junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma.
Ohio Valley scored the next five runs in the game with a run in the second and four runs in the fourth inning.
CU answered back with the tying run in the sixth as sophomore outfielder
Adam Linkous beat out an infield single to score Wiersma after he led off the frame with a double.
But, the Fighting Scots opened up a 9-5 advantage with four runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a four-run victory.
Peralta drove in two runs in the defeat.
Freshman utility
Anthony Stehlin struck out a career-best nine hitters over six innings of work, giving up five runs. Freshman pitcher
Logan Morrison (1-1) was charged with the loss in relief.
Concord welcomes Lake Erie to Anderson Field for a three-game series starting 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
