Concord Goes 1-1 Versus Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team split against Fairmont State at Anderson Field in Mountain East Conference action Saturday afternoon as it took an 18-2 win in game one before Fairmont State won game 4-2.

CU improves to 14-10 overall and 8-4 in the MEC while Fairmont State goes to 11-14 overall and 5-7 in conference.

Game 1: Concord 18 – Fairmont State 2
A 12-run third inning propelled the Mountain Lions to a victory in the series opener.

Entering the third inning, Concord was up 2-1 after RBI from junior outfielder Evan Webb and junior infielder Trevor Wiersma in the second.

Sophomore infielder Nathan Neff and sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous both reached to start the third inning before senior infielder Chad Frazier sent a home run deep over the left center field fence to ignite the rally. Junior infielder Adrian Peralta bounced a double down the left field line to bring in two more runs with the bases loaded.

The scoring continued as junior infielder Jakob Divers, Linkous and Wiersma each recorded an RBI before Frazier notched his fourth RBI of the inning on a double. Senior catcher Paul Williams capped the inning by sending the first pitch he saw from FSU's Jack Johnston over the left field fence for his first home run of the season, a three-run shot.

CU added four runs in the sixth inning with two coming in on a RBI single from Linkous.

Junior pitcher Troy Beckner kept the Fighting Falcons off the bases after Fairmont State rolled up 30 runs in a doubleheader with UVa.-Wise on Friday. Beckner improved to 4-2 this season by allowing two runs on six hits and striking out four over seven innings.

Frazier and Linkous each had three hits to lead six different players who had multiple hits in game one. Frazier as well as Williams had four RBI.

Game 2: Fairmont State 4 – Concord 2
The Fighting Falcons scored three runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead from Concord as it went onto split the games with CU.

Frazier scored on an error in the first, and the 1-0 edge held up until a leadoff homer from FSU in the fifth inning.

But, the Mountain Lions had a response in the bottom of the frame. Webb reached on a two-out single. Peralta dropped a 3-2 pitch between the second baseman and right fielder in shallow right field to allow Webb to score all the way from first.

Down to its final two outs in the contest, Fairmont State tied the game with an RBI double and took the lead on a two-RBI single from Greg Yaksich. Concord went down in order in the bottom of the frame to drop the game 4-2.

Freshman utility Anthony Stehlin (2-3) tossed 6.1 innings as he gave up four runs on eight hits, and struck out five batters.

Six different Mountain Lions had a hit in the game. Frazier was on base three times with a hit and two walks.

Concord starts MEC South Division play 1:00 p.m. Saturday at West Virginia State.
