ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Shepherd Friday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Anderson Field.
Game 1: Shepherd 13 – Concord 2
The Rams (14-8, 9-1 MEC) scored the first 11 runs of the game over the first three innings.
Shepherd had four extra-base hits in the first three frames to aid the rally.
CU (13-9, 7-3 MEC) scored a run in the fourth on an RBI double from sophomore outfielder
Adam Linkous that brought in senior catcher
Paul Williams who doubled earlier in the inning. The Mountain Lions' second run was scored by junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark on a wild pitch by the Rams in the sixth.
Linkous recorded his sixth multi-hit game in just his 14
th start.
Junior pitcher
Will Guay (2-2) was charged with the loss as she struck out five batters in 2.1 innings.
Game 2: Shepherd 18 – Concord 9
SU overtook Concord with eight runs in the sixth inning as it swept the two-game series.
Both teams battled earlier on as the Mountain Lions had a pair of four-run rallies in the first three innings.
Senior infielder
Chad Frazier capped a four-run frame for Concord in the first inning with his second home run of the season, a two-run blast to straight away center field. The first two runs of the inning came on a two-RBI double from Clark—one of two doubles in the contest for the Scott, Depot West Virginia native.
After the Rams grabbed a 7-4 lead through 2.5 innings, CU tallied four more scores in its at-bat in the bottom of the third. Sophomore infielder
Jakob Divers started the rally with an RBI double before junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma curled a three-run home run inside the right field foul pole to put Concord 8-7.
Shepherd answered with a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the fourth. But, Clark doubled home Williams in the bottom half as CU opened back up a one-run advantage.
Sophomore pitcher
Trent Abernathy retired the side in order in the fifth, but SU plated eight runs in the sixth to take a 16-9 lead on its way to a nine-run victory.
Clark, Divers and Williams each had two hits in the contest. Clark and Wiersma each drove in three runs in the game.
Abernathy struck out three batters over five innings of work. Sophomore pitcher
Cody Dooley (2-2) was tagged with the loss in relief as he gave up four earned runs in the sixth.
The Mountain Lions welcome Fairmont State to Anderson Field 12:00 p.m. Saturday for a doubleheader.
