RECORDS
The Mountain Lions have won nine of their last 10 games to improve to 13-7 overall and leads the MEC South at 7-1.
Shepherd leads the MEC North with a mark of 7-1 and sports an overall record of 12-8.
FSU enters play this weekend with a record of 8-13 and is 2-6 against MEC foes.
MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
CU owns the best mark in the MEC South thanks in part to a pair of come-from-behind wins last weekend on its road trip to Urbana and Notre Dame.
In game one at Urbana, the Mountain Lions were down 3-2 heading to the seventh before a sacrifice fly from junior outfielder
Evan Webb tied the game, and an RBI single from junior infielder
Adrian Peralta helped Concord go ahead in the ninth inning.
The Maroon and Gray erased a 5-1 deficit in game one at Notre Dame to win 11-5. CU scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh to overtake the Falcons. Sunday marked the sixth time this season that Concord has won a game when trailing entering the sixth inning.
Additionally, it was the fifth time Concord has taken a lead and gone onto win in its last at-bat of the contest.
The 10 runs scored in the seventh at NDC were the most runs scored by the Mountain Lions in a single inning in 2018 and the most since it scored 11 runs on April 1, 2016 against Fairmont State.
Over the weekend, junior pitcher
Troy Beckner picked up his 150
th career strikeout with seven strikeouts against Notre Dame. The Roanoke, Virginia native moved into fifth on the all-time strikeouts list at Concord, and can pass James Sharp for fourth all-time at CU with two strikeouts in his next start.
Also in the career record book, senior infielder
Chad Frazier moved closer to eighth in all-time runs scored. Frazier crossed home five more times on the road trip to elevate his MEC lead in runs scored to 26, and bump his all-time total to 172 as a Mountain Lion. CU's shortstop needs two runs scored to pass
Ryan Johnston for seventh.
Friday will mark the second straight season Concord and Shepherd meet when they are leading their respective divisions in the conference. Last season, CU entered the doubleheader at 8-2 in the conference while Shepherd was 9-1.
The Rams won both games by scores of 5-3 and 16-4.
In game two versus the Rams, junior infielder
Brett Simmons tallied a career-best three hits.
Last season, the Mountain Lions won two of the three meetings with Fairmont State, although FSU did defeat Concord in the MEC Tournament, 12-6.
During the regular season, CU won on the road 9-0 and 8-5 against the Fighting Falcons.
Beckner struck out a career-best 12 batters in game one while tossing his second career shutout.
Junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark homered in both games of the doubleheader to pace the CU offense while Webb added his first career home run in game one.
Sophomore pitcher
Trent Abernathy earned his only career save in game two by tossing three innings with four strikeouts—it was the best outing of Abernathy's freshman season.
When the Mountain Lions last played Fairmont State at Anderson Field in 2016, CU outscored FSU 33-7 in a doubleheader sweep.
Junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma was 7-for-10 with nine RBI while senior catcher
Paul Williams accounted for six hits and three RBI.
SHEPHERD AT A GLANCE
SU has the best offense in the MEC, leading in both average (.320) and home runs (24).
Nick Atkinson is the reigning national player of the week after hitting .625 with seven extra-base hits and nine RBI in four games against Charleston and West Virginia State.
Ryan Potts sports the fourth-best ERA in the conference at 2.72 with 36 strikeouts in 39 innings.
FAIRMONT STATE AT A GLANCE
The Fighting Falcons have the MEC leader in batting average, Austin Norman (.467) and conference leader in ERA, Michael Stout (2.32). Norman also leads the league in RBI with 26.
FSU has lost six of its last eight games before it plays UVa.-Wise Friday and Concord Saturday.
Seven of the eight wins for Fairmont State have come away from its home field.
