Concord Goes 1-1 at Glenville State

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team split two Mountain East Conference games with Glenville State, winning 5-4 in nine innings, before falling 10-6 in game two Saturday afternoon at the Sue Morris Complex.

The Mountain Lions are 8-8 overall and 5-1 in MEC games. GSC goes to 10-12 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.

Game 1: Concord 5 – Glenville State 4 (Nine Innings)
A three-run fifth inning got Concord on the scoreboard and helped force extra innings.

Glenville State plated three runs in the second inning to jump out to a 3-0 edge as it maintained the lead until the fifth inning.

Three straight one-one walks in the fifth set up sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Pritchard to bring in sophomore pitcher / outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick to start the scoring for the Mountain Lions. Junior outfielder Abby Beatty followed Pritchard's single with a base hit of her own to score two more Concord runs and tie the game at 3-3.

With the score still knotted to start the seventh, Beatty led off the frame with her third home run of the season to give CU its first lead of the game, but the Pioneers were able to force extra innings with a run in the bottom of the inning.

After a scoreless eighth inning, freshman catcher / third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart singled with one out in the ninth and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Freshman catcher / outfielder Kayle Starnes ripped a double to left field to push Stewart across as the go-ahead run.

Fitzpatrick (5-3) retired Glenville State in order in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory for CU.

Fitzpatrick struck out a career-best six batter while scattering nine hits and allowing three earned runs.

Beatty had three hits and two RBI in the contest.

Fitzpatrick as well as Stewat added two hits for the Mountain Lions who totaled a season-best 13 hits.

Game 2: Glenville State 10 – Concord 6
Glenville State tallied five runs in the sixth inning to split the doubleheader with CU.

Both teams traded runs in the first inning as Beatty doubled home sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt in the Concord first.

Once the Mountain Lions grabbed a 1-0 edge, the next four runs belonged to the Pioneers as they took a 4-1 lead into the fourth inning.

CU rallied for three of the next four runs including a two-run home run by sophomore utility Amber Stokes in the fourth to draw within 4-3 of GSC. After Glenville State scored in the bottom of the frame, Witt responded by smacking a double that scored senior third baseman Alycea Watson to get Concord back to within 5-4.

Still down a run in the sixth inning with two outs, Fitzpatrick beat out an infield single that scored Stokes and freshman outfielder Dani Bloomingdale and gave the Mountain Lions a 6-5 advantage.

The Pioneers answered with five runs in the sixth inning to grab control of the contest as they went onto to win 10-6.

Fitzpatrick had two hits and two RBI from the leadoff spot for the Maroon and Gray. Witt added three hits in the nightcap.

Freshman pitcher Tara Williams (0-1) was charged with the loss in relief , tossing two innings.

CU continues its road trip at West Virginia Wesleyan 1:00 p.m. Sunday for a doubleheader.
