Concord Falls at West Virginia Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team lost a pair of games to West Virginia Wesleyan Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Culpepper Field.

WVWC (11-8, 4-2 MEC) won the first game 8-0 and took the second contest 9-4 over Concord (8-10, 5-3 MEC.

Game 1: West Virginia Wesleyan 8 – Concord 0
The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three innings as the contest only went five innings.

Sophomore pitcher / outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick broke up Wesleyan's Hannah Vet's no-hit bid with an infield single in the third inning.

Fitzpatrick (5-4) was charged with the defeat.

Vet allowed just one hit to Concord and struck out five.

Game 2: West Virginia Wesleyan 9 – Concord 4
After Concord scored three to start the contest, Wesleyan answered with seven straight run to open  a 7-3 edge on CU through two innings.

Fitzpatrick led off game two with a double to get the rally started for the Mountain Lions. Two batters later sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt advanced Fitzpatrick to third base. Down to its final out of the inning, Witt raced home on a wild pitch that also allowed sophomore utility Amber Stokes to reach base and keep the inning alive.

The next batter, junior first baseman Lauren Blunt, ripped a double to left field to bring in junior outfielder Abby Beatty and sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Pritchard.

WVWC answered with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with four more scores in the second.

The Mountain Lions cut into the Bobcats' lead in the fourth as freshman catcher / third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart came home on an RBI groundout.

However, Wesleyan plated two more runs in the fifth for the final margin of victory.

Fitzpatrick had a team-best three hits while Blunt and Witt each accounted for two hits.

Pritchard dropped to 3-5 with the loss as she struck out four hitters in five innings in the circle.

The Mountain Lions hosts Charleston 4:00 p.m. Thursday for the first home conference games of 2018.
