Concord Records Two One-Run Wins, Extends Winning Streak to Eight

URBANA, Ohio – The Concord University baseball team picked up two Mountain East Conference road wins Saturday afternoon against Urbana at Blue Knight Field.

The Mountain Lions move to 12-6 overall and 6-0 in league with a 4-3 win in game one and 6-5 win in the nightcap.  UU drops to 2-18 on the season and 2-4 in the MEC.

Game 1: Concord 4 – Urbana 3 (Nine Innings)
CU was able to force extra innings with a run in the seventh and took the lead in the ninth on an RBI single from junior infielder Adrian Peralta.

The Blue Knights tallied the first run of the game with score in the bottom of the first.

Junior outfielder Evan Webb led off the second with a walk and came in to score on a groundout to tie the game. The Mountain Lions used some small ball again in the third to take the lead. Senior infielder Chad Frazier reached on an error to start the inning and scored on a fielder's choice two batters later to give CU a 2-1 edge.

Junior pitcher Will Guay kept Urbana off the scoreboard until it scratched across two runs in the fifth to grab a 3-2 advantage in the contest.

The one-run lead held up until the Mountain Lions rallied in the seventh. Frazier was hit with a two-strike pitch and senior catcher Paul Williams followed by drawing a walk. After a sacrifice bunt put both in scoring position, Webb drove a pitch to center field for a sacrifice fly that scored Frazier and tied the game at 3-3.

In relief of Guay, sophomore pitcher Cody Dooley kept UU off the bases until another CU rally in the ninth.

After getting hit with a pitch, sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous stole second base. Peralta shot a single into left field that brought Linkous in as the game-winning run.

Dooley put a runner on base with two outs, but retired the final batter of the game as CU won 4-3.

Peralta had two hits in the game while Webb tallied two RBI.

Dooley improved to 2-1 with three hitless innings of relief, allowing just one base runner on a hit by pitch.

Game 2: Concord 6 – Urbana 5
The Mountain Lions raced out to a 6-1 advantage through three innings then held off a late Urbana charge.

RBI singles from junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark and Peralta capped a three-run first for Concord.

After UU scored a run in the bottom of the first, Clark responded with his second RBI in as many innings that scored sophomore infielder Nathan Neff.

In the third, the first three batters reached to start the frame. With the bases full, Frazier slapped a single up the middle with two outs that plated Linkous and Webb to give CU a 6-1 lead.

Sophomore pitcher Trent Abernathy allowed just one run and five hits while striking out five batters through five innings. However, in the sixth the Blue Knights scored four runs to get within 6-5 of the Mountain Lions.

Senior pitcher Reece Edwards entered the game and struck out the final batter in the sixth with the tying run on third and the go-ahead run at first base.

Edwards got two quick outs in the seventh before consecutive hitters reached to extend the inning. But, Edwards induced a flyout to center field to end the game.

Clark and Linkous paced the offense with three hits apiece. Clark added two RBI while Frazier also knocked in two runs.

Abernathy ran his record to 2-0 with the win on the mound. Edwards picked up his fifth career save by going 1.2 innings and allowing two hits and striking out one.

CU continues its road trip 12:00 p.m. Sunday at Notre Dame.
