Concord Takes Two from Charleston

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team swept two games from the University of Charleston Monday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play.

The Mountain Lions even their record at 7-7 as they open up MEC play at 4-0. UC falls to 13-9 on the season and 0-4 in the league.

Game 1: Concord 6 – Charleston 2
Concord took advantage of five Charleston errors as it scored four of its six runs during the third and fourth innings.

Junior infielder Kylie Kent scored CU's first run on an error by Charleston in the third in what was the third defensive miscue in the frame. With the rally still going, senior third baseman Alycea Watson plated sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt on a two-out RBI single.

In the fourth inning, the Mountain Lions were able to extend their lead to 4-1 as Kent scored junior first baseman Lauren Blunt on an RBI single after Blunt led off the frame with her own base hit. The second run came courtesy of sophomore pitcher / first baseman Darby Fitpatrick racing home on another UC error.

CU added a run in the sixth and seventh inning with Kent plating Witt on her second RBI single in the contest. The final Concord insurance run was scored by Watson on a fielder's choice in the seventh.

Fitzpatrick improved to 4-3 in the circle this season by scattering nine hits and allowing two earned runs in seven innings of work.

Game 2: Concord 8 – Charleston 4
The Mountain Lions busted open a 1-1 tie with a five-run fifth inning en route to a four-run victory.

The first run in the five-run rally came courtesy of Kent's third RBI on the afternoon as she reached on a bunt single.

With two runners on base, Witt ripped a double into left field to score Fitzpatrick and Kent to give CU a 4-1 advantage. One of three UC errors in game two allowed sophomore pitcher / first baseman Rachel Prtichard and Witt to round the bases for two more runs in the fifth.

The final two runs for Concord came on wild pitches on the sixth inning as Blunt and Fitzpatrick came in to score from third in each instance.

UC added two runs in the bottom of the sixth to trim the CU lead to 8-4, but Pritchard induced a double play to end the threat and give Concord a sweep of the Golden Eagles.

Each of CU's 1-4 hitters of Fitzpatrick, Kent, Witt and Pritchard had at least two hits in the game with Witt driving in two runs and adding three doubles.

Pritchard got her third win of the season by going 6.2 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits.

The Mountain Lions are in action at Davis & Elkins 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.
