Concord Shutouts West Virginia State in Doubleheader Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University softball team began Mountain East Conference play Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of West Virginia State by scores of 1-0 and 4-0.

CU improves to 5-7 on the season and 2-0 in league play. The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, drop to 12-8 overall and 0-2 against league foes.

Game 1: Concord 1 – West Virginia State 0
Sophomore pitcher / outfielder Darby Fitzpatrick tossed her first shutout of the season while recording her fifth complete game in 2018 as she limited WVSU in the performance.

Junior outfielder Abby Beatty provided the game's only RBI with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to push across sophomore second baseman / shortstop Jenna Witt who rocketed a double with one out. Sophomore first baseman / pitcher Rachel Pritchard moved Witt to third with a single before Beatty's sac fly to left field.

Fitzpatrick kept the Yellow Jackets in check as she retired the side in order in four of seven innings in the contest. The Pocomoke City, Maryland native struck out three batters and induced 11 groundouts in the game as she picked up her third win of the season.

Beatty, junior infielder Kylie Kent, Pritchard and Witt each had a hit for the Mountain Lions.

Game 2: Concord 4 – West Virginia State 0
CU got three quick runs in its first three at-bats to jump in front of West Virginia State early in the nightcap.

Pritchard got Concord on the board in the first as she drove in Fitzpatrick who started the game by getting hit with a pitch. In the second, Beatty found her way aboard to start the inning, via a leadoff walk. After moving to second, the Roanoke, Virginia native came around to score on a two-out base hit by freshman catcher / third baseman Kaitlyn Stewart.

Witt was able to add to the lead for the Mountain Lions in the third inning with her fourth home run of the season—a solo shot.

With the three-run cushion, freshman pitcher Tara Williams was stellar in her collegiate debut as she surrendered five hits while striking out three batters. Williams earned her first win in the contest.

Concord added an insurance run in the fifth inning as Fitzpatrick smacked a one-out double—her first extra-base hit of the season to score Stewart.

The Mountain Lions had just five hits in the game, but all five were either run-scoring knocks or led to runs being scored for the Maroon and Gray. Stewart led the offensive effort with two hits in the contest.

CU continues its road trip 3:00 p.m. Monday at Charleston.
