SALEM, Va. – The Concord University softball team lost 5-3 to Edinboro Sunday morning at the Moyer Sports Complex in the Salem Tournament.
EU (1-5) rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh and held off a Concord (3-7) rally in the bottom half of the frame to secure the win.
All three CU runs came in the third inning. After back-to-back, one-out singles from sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick and junior infielder
Kylie Kent, sophomore pitcher / first baseman
Rachel Pritchard ripped a double to left field to score both runners. Junior outfielder
Abby Beatty had her own double to score Pritchard to complete the rally.
Pritchard was able to keep the Fighting Scots off the scoreboard until they plated two runs on a single in the top of the fifth to trim the CU lead to 3-2.
Just one base runner reach in the next three half innings, setting up Concord needing just three outs to win in the seventh.
After allowing the first two batters in the frame to reach, Fitzpatrick took over in the circle and promptly induced consecutive groundouts with the go-ahead run at second base. Down to its final out, Edinboro's Maycee Shumaker launched a home run to push EU in front 5-3.
The Mountain Lions got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but was unable to push across any runs.
Pritchard was charged with the loss in the circle, but led Concord's offense with two RBI.
CU opens up Mountain East Conference play Saturday at Charleston.
