WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Concord University baseball team notched two comeback wins over Winston-Salem State to sweep the Rams Friday afternoon in non-conference play.
CU won the first game 7-5 and took game two 4-2. The Mountain Lions improve to 2-3 on the season while WSSU drops to 1-4.
Game 1: Concord 7 – Winston-Salem State 5
Concord scored five runs in its last at-bat to overcome a 5-2 deficit in the seventh inning.
With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, junior infielder
Brett Simmons drew a walk to start the rally. Freshman utility
Anthony Stehlin followed with an RBI single to plate senior catcher
Paul Williams. Sophomore infielder
Nathan Neff's fielder's choice scored junior infielder
Adrian Peralta to knot the game up.
Senior infielder
Chad Frazier kept the rally alive with a single before junior outfielder
Evan Webb patiently drew a second bases loaded walk in the frame to bring in Stehlin. CU added an insurance run as Neff scored on an error.
In the bottom half of the frame, junior pitcher
Will Guay (1-0) stranded the tying-run on base to end the game as he earned the win in relief for the Mountain Lions. Guay struck out four batters and allowed an unearned run in three innings of work.
Concord scored its first two runs in the first as Williams provided a two-run single before WSSU recorded five unanswered runs.
Junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark, Frazier and Williams each had two hits in the game.
Junior pitcher
Troy Beckner fanned seven batters in the first four innings of the game while scattering five hits and allowing one earned run.
Game 2: Concord 4 – Winston-Salem State 2
Concord waited until its final two at-bats to get on the board and eventually down Winston-Salem State in the nightcap.
The Rams scored twice in the bottom of the second, and that lead would hold up until CU tied the game in the sixth. The Mountain Lions had the first three batters reach in the top of the sixth, and Williams plated Frazier on a sac fly in foul territory. Two batters later—with two outs—Webb came in to score on a WSSU error to tie the game.
In the top of the seventh, Simmons started the rally once again with a leadoff single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Frazier, plated Simmons with his first double of the season. With Frazier at second, Webb poked a single through the left side to extend the CU lead to 4-2.
Just like Guay in game one, freshman pitcher
Logan Morrison stranded the game-tying run on base to end the game.
Morrison earned his first collegiate win by throwing two innings in relief of Stehlin. Morrison struck out two batters. In five innings, Stehlin gave up two runs on six hits and also struck out two.
Concord opens up its home schedule February 24 with a doubleheader against Pitt-Johnstown.
