Concord Beats Pitt-Johnstown, 12-4

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team scored nine unanswered over two innings to take the first game, 12-4, in a two-game weekend set against Pitt-Johnstown at Anderson Field Saturday afternoon.

UPJ (1-3) got on the board first with a run in both the second and third innings.

The 2-0 edge held up until Concord (3-3) took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. The first two runs scored on groundouts by junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark and junior outfielder Evan Webb. With the bases empty, junior infielder Trevor Wiersma launched the first CU home run of the season to give the Mountain Lions a 3-2 lead.

Concord busted the game open in the fifth inning with six scores. After the first three batters reached to begin the frame, sophomore infielder Nathan Neff brought in junior infielders Adrian Peralta and Brett Simmons to begin the scoring in the fifth. Senior infielder Chad Frazier added a second Concord home run with a two-run blast, and senior catcher Paul Williams had an RBI base hit to make the advantage 9-2 for the Mountain Lions.

Simmons plated Clark on a fielder's choice in the seventh. Clark notched his second and third RBI of the afternoon with a base hit in the eighth inning.

Clark tallied three hits to go along with three RBI for the Mountain Lions. Frazier and Neff each had two hits.

CU's 1-4 hitters of Neff, Frazier, Webb and Clark combined to go 6-for-14 at the plate with eight RBI and eight runs scored.

Junior pitcher Troy Beckner (1-1) tossed five innings, giving two runs on seven hits. Beckner struck out eight batters, and has 20 strikeouts on the season in 13 innings of work.

Concord and UPJ will finish their series 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
