Concord Uses Big Fifth Inning to Pull Away from UPJ, 16-5

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team plated a season-high 16 runs on its way to a 16-5 win over Pitt-Johnstown Sunday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Mountain Lions (4-3) used big offensive innings in the fifth and eighth to ease to the 11-run victory over UPJ (1-4).

With the game scoreless, Pitt-Johnstown scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning before CU busted out with eight runs in the bottom of the frame.

Sophomore outfielder Adam Linkous started the scoring with an RBI double. The next batter, sophomore infielder Nathan Neff, tied the game with two RBI of his own on a double down the left field line. After a bases-loaded walk to junior infielder Trevor Wiersma, senior catcher Paul Williams cleared the bases with a double to left field. Williams scored the final CU run in the fifth on an infield single by junior infielder Adrian Peralta.

The Mountain Cats scored two runs in the top of sixth to draw within 8-5, but Concord scored once in the seventh and added seven runs in the eighth.

Williams was in the middle of the hitting again in the eighth as he drilled his second double of the afternoon to score junior catcher / outfielder Jordan Clark and Wiersma. Sophomore infielder Jakob Divers, Peralta and junior infielder Evan Webb all tallied an RBI in the inning as well. Peralta's run-scoring hit was a double into the left-center field gap.

All 10 batters that Concord sent to the plate for the game either scored a run, notched a hit or had at least one RBI.

Peralta and Williams each had three hits. Clark and Webb both recorded two hits in CU's 15-hit attack. Williams racked up five RBI with Neff and Peralta each adding two.

Freshman utility Anthony Stehlin tossed five innings for his first career win on the mound. Stehlin allowed five runs and struck out four batters.

Freshman pitcher Logan Morrison and sophomore pitcher Cody Dooley provided four innings of shutout relief. The two combined to allow just two hits and strike out three.

CU welcomes in Ohio Valley to Anderson Field for three games starting 12:00 p.m. Friday.
