Concord Drops Overtime Contest to Shepherd

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was bested by Shepherd, 76-72, in overtime Thursday night in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.

Senior forward Heather Chapman sunk two foul shots with 1:33 left in overtime to put CU (11-11, 7-10 MEC) up by three points, 72-69. However, the Rams (11-12, 7-10 MEC) drained a three-pointer off an offensive rebound on the next possession to tie the game with 1:06 on the clock.

After a Concord turnover, Shepherd's Morgan Arden scored two of her game-best 35 points to lift Shepherd to a 74-72 lead and eventual four points win.

The two squads battled back and forth in the opening ten minutes with CU leading, 16-15. The Mountain Lions went on a 10-0 run to open the second quarter to gain a 26-15 advantage. Junior guard Andreanna Pool paced the run with five points.

Shepherd recovered from the CU spurt and finished the final 5:57 of the first half on a 14-2 run to grab a 29-28 halftime edge. Much like the second quarter, Concord scored 10 straight points to begin the third quarter. Senior guard Danielle Catron and Riley Fitzwater each had four points in the span.

The Mountain Lions hung onto their lead through the third quarter and much of the fourth until Arden hit two free throws to put SU up 60-59 with 1:09 left in regulation. Catron responded with a foul-line jumper before two more Arden free throws. Concord took back momentum when sophomore Madison May converted a three-point play with 24 seconds left to give CU a 64-62 lead, but Arden sent the game to overtime with a layup with 13 seconds left in the fourth.

May led the Mountain Lions with 21 points including going 11-for-13 at the foul line. The Athens, West Virginia native also added nine rebounds and four blocks. Fitzwater recorded a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds as well as matching May's four blocks.

Catron and Pool also finished in double figures with 12 points.

CU plays host to Fairmont State 2:00 p.m. Saturday for its annual Pink Game.
