Concord Falls at Home to Fairmont State

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team fell to Fairmont State, 71-57, at the Carter Center Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.

Fairmont State (13-11, 8-10 MEC) controlled the pace in the first half as it outscored CU (11-12, 7-11 MEC) by five in both the first and second quarters. The Mountain Lions only had one lead in the first half, 3-2, after senior guard Danielle Catron buried a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the contest.

After FSU scored the opening basket of the second half, Concord went on a 15-8 run to cut the deficit to 43-38 with 5:03 left in the third quarter. Freshman forward Riley Fitzwater spurred the run with six points. Senior forward Heather Chapman added two layups, Catron hit a three-pointers and junior guard Emily Boothe made two free throws.

CU continued to surge as it cut the deficit to 45-42 with 2:50 left in the third after two more Boothe foul shots. However, the Fighting Falcons were able to keep their lead at two possessions for the remainder of the quarter.

With 8:39 remaining in the game, Fairmont State opened its lead back to double digits, 57-47, and the lead never got back under eight for the final eight minutes of the contest.

The Fighting Falcons had 24 second-chance points on 21 offensive rebounds despite CU holding FSU to 1-for-21 from the foul line.

Sophomore forward Madison May paced the scoring for Concord with 13 points. Boothe added 12 points while Catron went for 11 points.

Fitzwater scored nine points, grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked five shots in the contest.

CU wraps up non-conference play with a game at Davis & Elkins 5:30 p.m. Monday.
