ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University baseball team faces Winston-Salem State 2:00 p.m. Friday in a doubleheader from BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
RECORDS
Concord is 0-3 after two close defeats in a series at Wingate.
Winston-Salem State also opened up the 2018 season last weekend by going 1-2 versus Millersville.
MOUNTAIN LION NOTES
After dropping the first game to Wingate, 18-5, CU fell in the final two games by scores of 7-6 and 1-0.
Freshman utility
Anthony Stehlin was the tough luck loser in the 1-0 defeat as he allowed no earned runs and just two hits in a complete-game effort.
Stehlin's performance marked the first time a Concord pitcher had given up two or fewer hits in an outing that went five or more innings since junior pitcher
Troy Beckner allowed two hits in seven innings against Notre Dame on March 19 of last season.
At the plate, junior catcher / outfielder
Jordan Clark went 5-for-11 with three doubles during the weekend three-game set. Clark also drove in four RBI.
The Scott Depot, West Virginia native now has 26 career doubles.
CU's pitching staff accounted for 20 strikeouts last weekend with Beckner and junior pitcher
Will Guay each picking up five strikeouts. In the final three games of last season, Concord struck out 21 opposing hitters.
Friday's doubleheader will mark the fourth consecutive year the two Atlantic Regional foes have met. Of the last nine contests, eight have been decided by three runs or less.
Winston-Salem State holds a slight 5-4 series edge over Concord over the last three seasons after the teams split a four-game set last February.
CU is 4-2 against Winston-Salem State in the last three years when it scores at least five runs with oen of the losses coming last year, 8-5.
Junior infielder
Trevor Wiersma is batting .500 (11-for-22) in his career versus WSSU with three doubles and two RBI.
Meanwhile, junior outfielder
Evan Webb also posted some impressive numbers at Winston-Salem State last season, going 7-for-14 with five RBI.
In his only career outing against the Rams, Beckner tossed five innings, giving up three earned runs and getting a no decision in a 10-7 Concord win last season.
WINSTON-SALEM STATE AT A GLANCE
WSSU recorded just 19 hits in its three-game series with Millersville with the lone victory coming in the opening game, 5-4.
In the first game, pitcher Jalen Scott tossed 5.1 innings, scattering four hits and two earned runs to go along with five strikeouts.
Randy Norris was 5-for-9 with three RBI in the final two games of the series with all three RBI coming in a game two loss, 10-4.
