Concord Drops Road Contest Against West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team was unable to keep pace in a high-scoring affair with West Liberty in a 100-89 loss at the ASRC in Mountain East Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Lions (11-10, 7-9 MEC) jumped out to a 20-15 lead after 10 minutes as freshman forward Riley Fitzwater scored six points and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior guard Lindsey Overbey poured in seven of her career-high 28 points during the first period.

Concord held WLU (11-11, 10-6 MEC) to 31.6 percent (6-for-19) shooting in the first quarter, but West Liberty stormed back by outscoring CU 31-21 in the second quarter to take a 46-41 halftime lead.

The Hilltoppers were able to build a third-quarter lead of 60-48 with 5:29 left in the period before Concord finished the quarter on an 18-12 scoring run to trim the deficit to 72-66 going to the fourth. Six different Mountain Lions scored during the run with Overbey paving the way with eight points.

Over the first 1:50 of the fourth quarter, West Liberty scored 11 of the quarter's first 13 points to gain an 83-68 lead. However, CU wasn't done with its comeback attempt after a layup from sophomore forward Madison May cut the deficit to 87-80 with 5:18 left.

But it was as close as Concord would get for the remainder of the game as it fell by 11 points.

Overbey led five Mountain Lions with 10 or more points. Overbey was 12-for-17 from the field, and added seven rebounds to go with her 28 points. May tallied 17 points with 10 coming after halftime. Senior forward Heather Chapman, Fitzwater and junior guard Andreanna Pool each scored 10 points. Fitzwater collected a double-double by grabbing 11 rebounds. The Glenville, West Virginia native also blocked eight shots.

Concord plays five of its last seven regular games at home starting 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Shepherd.
