Concord Readies for Road Game at West Virginia State, Senior Day Versus UVa.-Wise

ATHENS, W.Va. - The Concord University men's basketball team closes the regular season with a trip to West Virginia State 7:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting UVa.-Wise on Senior Day 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

RECORDS
CU starts the week with a 14-12 overall mark and 10-10 in the MEC.

The Mountain Lions are tied for sixth with Charleston and West Virginia State, and all three teams are one game back of UVa.-Wise.

By going 2-0 this week, Concord  would finish either fifth or sixth in the stand.

CU would win a tiebreaker against both WVSU and UVa.-Wise with wins this week.

West Virginia State is 12-13 overall while UVa.-Wise is 13-13.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Senior guards Cal Cistaro and B.J. Hamlet will play their final game at the Carter Center Saturday afternoon.

Hamlet has played in 102 games in his Concord career.

Hamlet needs 11 more three-pointers to reach 200 for his career.

The Roanoke, Virginia native is currently eighth in made three-pointers in Concord history and needs two more to pass Scott Goins for seventh all-time.

Only five players have made 200 or more three-pointers in their CU career.

Prior to the start of play this week, Hamlet has posted the ninth-best three-pointer percentage in program history (37.7 percent).

Cistaro has appeared in 41 games during his time in the Maroon and Gray.

The Clarksburg, West Virginia native has been apart of 67 wins since the start of the 2014-15 season, and was on the 2016 Mountain East Conference Championship team.

Since the start of 2000, CU has had just three seasons with 20 or more wins, and Cistaro was on two of the teams, 2014-15 and 2015-16.

700 CLUB
Junior guard Tommy Bolte scored 34 points in a 63-60 win over Urbana Saturday--his 11th 30-point game of the season.

For the year, Bolte has scored 699 points.Only four players have scored 700 or more points in a season with Ron Ward and Lewis Muse accomplishing the feat twice, and Tyrone Anderson and David Darnell each doing it once.

Bolte is also ahead of Muse's single-season points per game record.

During the 2003-04 season, Muse averaged 28.5 points per game while Bolte is pouring in 30.4 points per game on average.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
In its two wins last week, the Mountain Lions had a decisive advantage on the glass as they outrebounded Urbana 44-31 and Notre Dame, 43-32.

Overall, it was the seventh time this season that Concord has owned a double-digit advantage on the glass and all seven instances have come since January 13 versus West Liberty--a 13-game span.

While Concord did not have a double-digit rebounder in either contest, the Mountain Lions had five different players pull down at least six boards on average in the two games.

Freshman forward Antonio Patterson led the group with eight per game including a career-best nine versus Urbana.

Freshman forward Jyles Webster grabbed eight against Notre Dame and seven versus UU for a 7.5 average.

Bolte notched 6.5 boards per game, and sophomore forward Trey Brisco and junior forward Jafar Musa each grabbed six rebounds per game.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST
Last season, Concord closed the regular season by winning six of its final eight games. In 2017-18, CU is 3-3 in its six February games with all three losses coming to teams that would make the NCAA Tournament if the season ended right now.

The Mountain Lions are attempting to post a record of 11-5 in its last 16 February games with wins over West Virginia State and UVa.-Wise.

POINTS, POINTS AND MORE POINTS
When Concord and West Virginia State meet, there's no shortage of points that are scored.

In each of the last five games and seven of the last nine games in the series, the winning team has scored at least 90 points including CU posting 96 in a 96-87 win December 2 in the Carter Center.

Last year at WVSU, the Yellow Jackets recorded 90 points in a two-point win over Concord.

And the Mountain Lions poured in 92 in a 10-point win last year at home. Bolte went for a career-best 46 points in the December meeting as he shot 14-for-20 from the field and 16-for--20 at the foul line.

Bolte's 46 points are a single-game school record and the fourth most in a Division II game this season.

Freshman forward Trey Shuff scored a career-high 14 points as the Mountain Lions shot 51.6 percent from the field--their second highest percentage of the season--in the win.

TOP TWO
Entering the week, Bolte leads the MEC in scoring while UVa.-Wise's Taiwo Badmus overtook Haywood Highsmith of Wheeling Jesuit for second in the conference in scoring at 21.8 points per game.

Both players lead the league in scoring despite Badmus ranking eighth in three-pointers made (65) and Bolte 10th (55).

Bolte has shot 50 percent or better in four of the last six games to push his field percentage to 50.2 percent while Badmus is shooting 46.6 percent this season.

GLASS SMASH
When Concord defeated UVa.-Wise 80-77 in overtime on January 20, the Mountain Lions owned a lopsided 58-35 advantage on the glass.

Brisco and freshman Darian Peterson each collected their first career double-double while Webster pulled down a career-best 13 rebounds.

CU's 58 rebounds against UVa.-Wise are the fourth most in an MEC game this season.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
0- Time that Concord trailed against West Virginia State--there were no ties or lead changes in December.

38- CU's seniors will be seeking its 38th home win since 2014-15.

65- Concord won its first game this season when scoring less than 65 points by defeating Urbana 63-60.

WEST VIRGINIA STATE AT A GLANCE
West Virginia State has lost six straight games while allowing 80 or more points in each game.

Pat Johnson-Agwu is averaging 18.6 points and shooting nearly 60 percent from the field (59.2 percent).

Before WVSU's six-game losing streak, the Yellow Jackets won six consecutive games.

West Virginia is the third-highest scoring team in the MEC (86.7 points per game).

UVA.-WISE AT A GLANCE
The Cavaliers start the week having won five straight and seven of their last eight games that included wins over Fairmont State, Shepherd and Wheeling Jesuit.

Michal Seals leads the MEC in assists (6.9 per game) and is top five in steals (2.0 per game).

Badmus is averaging a double-double this season with 10.1 rebounds per game to go with his 21.8 points per contest.
