MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Concord University softball team dropped a pair of games to open the season at the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament as it lost to Molloy 2-0 and St. Anselm 4-2.
Game 1: Molloy 2 – Concord 0
Molloy scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and held CU to three hits.
Before the Lions came to bat in the first, Concord threatened to get on the board first as junior outfielder / pitcher
Abby Beatty walked and then advanced to second on a base hit by sophomore second baseman / shortstop
Jenna Witt, but CU rally was ended.
MC got an RBI double to start the scoring in the bottom of the first and had another run-scoring hit in the frame to open up a 2-0 edge.
Molloy's Courtney Greene limited the Mountain Lions to two more hits over the remaining six inning as junior first baseman
Lauren Blunt singled in the second and Witt doubled in the third.
However, Concord put together a scoring chance in its final at-bat. Still down 2-0, Blunt walked with one out. Two batters later, Blunt and sophomore pitcher / outfielder
Darby Fitzpatrick advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder
Chelsea Shepherd, but the final out was recorded by Greene without allowing CU to score.
Witt recorded two hits in the game.
Fitzpatrick was the tough-luck loser as she tossed six innings while scattering five hits and allowing two runs (one earned).
Game 2: Saint Anselm 4 – Concord 2
The Mountain Lions were unable to overcome four early runs by Saint Anselm in the nightcap.
Saint Anselm plated a run in the first and added three more in the second before CU scored twice in the bottom of the frame.
Sophomore utility
Amber Stokes started the rally by earning a walk before senior third baseman
Alycea Watson stepped up and smacked her second career home run to split the deficit for CU from four to two.
Concord was able to get a runner in scoring position in the third inning after Witt laced her second double of the day to left field, but it was the final runner that advanced to second base for the Mountain Lions in the game.
Sophomore pitcher / first baseman
Rachel Pritchard allowed four runs in a complete-game effort in the circle.
Beatty, Pritchard, Watson and Witt each had a hit for Concord.
The Mountain Lions play Southern New Hampshire at 10:00 a.m. Sunday before taking on Merrimack at 12:00 p.m. to finish up the Snowbird Freeze Out.
