WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team dropped a 77-68 decision to Wheeling Jesuit Thursday night in Mountain East Conference play at the McDonough Center.
The contest was tightly contested throughout featuring five ties and 10 lead changes.
CU (11-9, 7-8 MEC) controlled the first half as Wheeling Jesuit (10-11, 8-7 MEC) was only able to gain two leads in the opening half with both coming late in the first quarter.
The early stabilization by the Mountain Lions was led by junior guard
Andreanna Pool who dropped in eight points in the opening 10 minutes of the contest to give CU a 22-17 lead after one quarter.
Sophomore forward
Madison May continued the momentum by tallying nine of her team-high 20 points during the second period. However, the Cardinals would not go away, trailing Concord 36-35 at halftime.
The biggest lead of the third quarter was taken by CU, 44-40, after a Pool jumper with 5:38 left in the quarter. After three quarters, the game was deadlocked for third time, 50-50.
With the teams being tied for the fifth and final time at 57-57, WJU ripped off eight of the next 10 points to gain a 65-59 advantage. CU responded with consecutive buckets by senior guard
Danielle Catron and Pool to trim the deficit to 65-63 with 4:53 left, but it was as close as the Mountain Lions got for the remainder of the contest.
Joining May in double figures was junior guard
Emily Boothe who scored 10 of her 13 after halftime, going 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-3 from three-point range. Pool added a dozen points.
Freshman forward
Riley Fitzwater notched her 11
th double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds while swatting away three shots.
The Cardinals owned an 18-5 advantage in second chance points as they hauled in 11 offensive rebounds to CU's five.
Concord stays on the road when it faces West Liberty 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
