Concord Takes Winning Streak to Glenville State

ATHENS, W.Va. - Riding a three-game win streak, the Concord University men's basketball team travels to Glenville State 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in a Mountain East Conference matchup.

RECORDS
CU sports a record of 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference after a 98-91 win over West Virginia State.

Glenville State is also 5-2 this season and 2-2 versus MEC foes.

LIGHTING UP THE SCOREBOARD
In Concord's win over West Virginia State, the Mountain Lions went over 95 points for a third straight game. CU scored 99 points in a win over  Urbana before Thanksgiving, and came out of the break to post 106 points in a victory versus Charleston. Saturday marked the first time the Mountain Lions have scored 95 or more points in three straight games since a three-game stretch January 18-25, 2016 in wins over West Liberty, UVa.-Wise and West Virginia State. During this current run, senior guard Tommy Bolte is averaging 30.6 points per game and has assumed the MEC scoring lead at 27.0 points per game. Bolte is third nationally in scoring, and for his recent performances picked up MEC Player of the Week honors.
Junior guard Jair Rodgers has also chipped in the recent scoring streak as he is averaging 21.6 points per game over the last three contests while shooting 53.8 percent from the field (21-for-39) and 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from three-point range.

FREE THROW PARADE
The Mountain Lions made 27-of-30 free throws (90 percent) against West Virginia State, which was a season high in both makes and attempts from the charity stripe. Bolte finished 15-of-18 from the foul line which two shy of isr career high in made free throws, set last year in a win at WVSU. Junior forward Trey Brisco and Rodgers were a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line while junior forward Simun Kovac and senior forward Jafar Musa both made their two attempts. Concord leads the MEC in free throw shooting (79.9 percent / 123-for-154). Additionally by shooting 90 percent against the Yellow Jackets, it marked the third time in seven games CU has shot at least 85 percent at the charity stripe this season. All of last season, the Mountain Lions shot 85 percent at the foul line just four times in 30 games.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE DAVE
Sophomore forward David Bea Mulumba had a career day against West Virgina State as he recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Mulumba became the third different CU player with a double-double this season, joining Bolte and Brisco. Going into Saturday's game, Mulumba had collected just 11 rebounds through six games before doubling his rebound total against the Yellow Jackets. The Antwerp, Belgiuim native also becomes the third different Concord player with 10 or more rebounds in a game this season, joining Brisco and Kovac.With the help of Mulumba, the Mountain Lions held a decisive advantage in rebounds at West Virginia State, 47-31. CU is second in the MEC in rebounding margin this season, +6.3. If the season ended today, it would be Concord's best rebounding margin since the 1991-92 season when it finished the year at +8.0 in rebounds on average.

BALANCING ACT
As part of Concord's recent run on the offensive end of the floor, a quartet of players have been supplying scoring for the Mountain Lions along with Bolte and Rodgers. While Bolte and Rodgers are combining for nearly 50 points per game, Brisco, sophomore guard/forward Malik Johnson, Kovac and Mulumba have been averaging nearly 45 points per game in the last three games. Brisco and Johnson are each scoring 12 points per game over the last three contests. Mulumba is pouring in 10.3 points per game while Kovac is adding 9.3 points per game. Concord has had at least four players in double figures each of the last three games.

OFFENSE, OFFENSE, OFFENSE
Wednesday night's game should provide no shortage of offense between Concord and Glenville State. The Mountain Lions are averaging 101 points per game in their last contests and are shooting 58.3 percent (101-for-173) over that time. Dating back to the 2013-14 season, CU has shot 45 percent or better against Glenville State in 10 straight games including five games in which it has sported a field goal percentage of 50 percent or better. The Mountain Lions are 6-4 in those 10 games versus Glenville State. In his last four games versus GSC, Bolte is averaging 20.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game while shooting 50.7 percent from the floor. In last season's road win for CU, the Chillicothe, Ohio native scored 36 points on 15-for-32 shooting. Not only has Concord been scoring in bunches recently, the Pioneeres are scoring 106.1 points per game and connecting on 13 three-pointers each contest. However, Glenville State is also allowing opponents to score 106.0 points per game.

POINT GUARD BATTLE
Wednesday's contest features two of the best point guards in the MEC with Concord's Bolte going up against Glenville State's Darhius Nunn. While Bolte is leading the conference in points per game, Nunn is averaging 10.0 assists per game which not only leads the MEC, but is tops in all of Division II. Additionally, Nunn is averaging 23.4 points per game which ranks in a tie for second in the MEC. In four career games against Concord, Nunn is averaging 14.7 points per game. In two games last season, he went for 29 and 24 points against CU.
