Concord Locks Down Davis & Elkins Late for a 66-60 Win

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team overcame a third-quarter deficit to down Davis & Elkins 66-60 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference game at the Carter Center.

Trailing by one, 33-32, at halftime, the Mountain Lions (7-3) found themselves trailing 45-39 after consecutive three-pointers by Davis & Elkins (3-7) with five minutes left in the third quarter. CU would erase the deficit, finishing the third quarter on a 15-3 run to take a 54-48 into the fourth quarter.

The run was fueled by three three-pointers, two from senior guard Andreanna Pool and one from sophomore guard Savannah Dunford. To start the fourth quarter, Dunford picked up right where she left off as she canned a triple on Concord's first possession of the fourth. After Dunford's basket at the 9:33 mark of the fourth, neither team scored until the Senators  hit a pair of free throws with 3:07 left in the game to make it a 57-52 contest.

On the next Mountain Lions' possession, Pool heaved up a three-pointer from 28 feet at the end of the shot clock that went through the net to stretch the lead back to eight. However, D&E did not go away as it cut the CU lead back to 62-60 with 55 seconds remaining. In the final minute, Concord hit on 6-of-8 free throws and got two blocks, one each from sophomore forward Riley Fitzwater and junior forward Madison May to preserve the win.

In the fourth period, the Maroon and Gray held the Senators to 17.6 percent (3-for-17) from the floor. For the game, Concord limited the Davis & Elkins to 29.4 percent (20-for-68).

Pool led the Mountain Lions in scoring as she poured in 20 points on 6-for-11 shooting including a 5-for-9 performance from three-point range. May hit on 6-of-12 shots to finish with 16 points to go along with  five rebounds and five assists.

Dunford came off the bench to supply nine points on three made three-pointers. Freshman forward Maggie Guynn went for eight points off the bench. Fitzwater just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.

Fitzwater and May each had four blocks.

The Mountain Lions will be off from games until January 3 when it hosts Salem at 2:00 p.m.
