ATHENS, W.Va.—The Concord University women's basketball team improved to 6-3 overall for the season and 4-2 in conference after picking up a home victory, 78-51, against West Virginia Wesleyan Saturday night in Mountain East Conference play at the Carter Center.
Concord (6-3, 4-2 MEC) led wire-to-wire against Wesleyan (2-6, 2-4 MEC) including a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, and the Mountain Lions held a 19-point lead at halftime, 41-22.
To start the second half, WVWC cut Concord's lead to 18 points, but the Mountain Lions went on a 12-5 run. Five different Concord players aided the run by scoring at least two points including two buckets from junior forward
Madison May.
Early in the fourth quarter, Concord saw its advantage under 20 for the first time since the early stages of the third, 59-20. However, sophomore forward
Riley Fitzwater and May converted consecutive baskets to run the advantage back to 23 with eight minutes left.
Concord shot at least 50 percent in three of the four quarters including hitting on 60 percent or better in the second and fourth quarters. Defensively, the Mountain Lions held Wesleyan to 40 percent shooting in all four quarters and 30.9 percent (21-of-68).
For the game, CU knocked down 55.4 percent of its shots (31-of-56) and had 46 points in the paint to Wesleyan's 16.
May recorded her third straight double-double by tallying 17 points and 13 rebounds. Fitzwater led all scorers with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting while hauling in seven rebounds. Senior guard
Andreanna Pool tallied 11 points and handed out a game-high five assists.
Sophomore guard
Keely Lundy added 10 points and five rebounds.
The Mountain Lions welcome Davis & Elkins to the Carter Center for a non-conference contest 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.
