Concord Finishes Second at MEC Championship, Weitzel Named MEC Runner of the Year

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University men's cross country team was the runner-up at the Mountain East Conference Championship Saturday morning on the Crispin Golf Course at Oglebay Resort. 
 
The Mountain Lions tallied 46 points as Charleton won the team title with 28 points. 
 
For the second time in three years, senior Jason Weitzel was the individual champion and was also the MEC Runner of the Year as he completed the course in 27:08 to finish 24 seconds ahead of second place. It also marked the third straight season a CU runner has been the individual champion after Justin Snyder took the crown last year. 
 
A year after being on the All-MEC Second Team, sophomore Samuel Haynes took sixth place to earn All-MEC First Team honors as he clocked a time of 28:54.
 
Concord placed four runners on the All-MEC Second Team. 
 
Sophomore Andrew Barbera finished 11thwith a showing of 29:53. Freshman Cedric Drennen also ran 29:53 as he placed 12thin the field. 
 
Senior Michael Ruhnke earned his fourth straight All-MEC honor by placing 16thand running 30:09 for the 8,000-meter course. Freshman Isaac Prather clocked a time of 30:21 and finished 18thto earn a spot on the all-conference second team. 
 
Senior Damon Akers rounded out the competitors for the Mountain Lions as he finished 21stwith a time of 31:14. 
 
Saturday marked the fourth consecutive year that CU has had at least five runners make all-conference. 
 
Concord runs at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championship November 17 at Schenley Park in Pittsburgh.
