BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team opened up a 30-point halftime lead as it cruised past Bluefield State, 83-52, Tuesday night in non-conference action at Ned Shott Gymnasium.
The Mountain Lions (2-1) came out of the gate fast as it started on an 11-0 run and outscored BSC (2-1) 23-6 in the first quarter. Sophomore guard
Keely Lundy hit a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the game to lead the early outburst.
Concord kept its lead above 17 points for the remainder of the first half as senior guard
Andreanna Pool scored 19 of her game-high 30 points in the first half. Sophomore forward
Tamra Scott added 12 of her 14 points in the first half as Concord led 43-13 at the break.
Bluefield State, however, worked the deficit down to 20 points near the end of the third quarter before senior guard
Emily Boothe connected on a three-pointer with 1:02 left in the third quarter to temporarily quiet the BSC run.
In the fourth quarter, the Blues got their deficit down to 54-38 with 9:41 left before CU went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:38 to lead 64-40. Sophomore forward
Madison May dropped in five of her 11 points during the spurt.
The Mountain Lions expanded their lead to as much as 34 points after a three-pointer by freshman guard
Gracie Robinson with 2:19 left in the game before winning by 31.
Pool tallied her first career 30-point game in the win, and was the first Concord player to score 30 points since May did at West Virginia Wesleyan last December. Pool was 11-for-21 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range.
Scott posted career highs in points (14) and rebounds (13) on her way to her first career double-double. May also added a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds with six of her boards coming on the offensive end.
Boothe rounded out the CU scorers in double figures with 10 points.
Concord opens Mountain East Conference play 2:00 p.m. Saturday at home against Notre Dame.
