Concord Opens MEC Play with 88-81 Win over Notre Dame

ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University women's basketball team outscored Notre Dame by nine points in a 2:26 stretch of the fourth game as it won 88-81 Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at the Carter Center.

With the game tied 71-71 and 4:26 remaining in the game, the Mountain Lions (3-1, 1-0 MEC) went on an 11-2 run to grab an 82-73 lead. Junior forward Madison May started the run with an old-fashioned three-point play before sophomore forward Riley Fitzwater converted a layup. Up 76-63, senior guards Andreanna Pool and Emily Boothe hit back-to-back three-pointers to give CU an 82-73 edge with two minutes remaining.

But, Notre Dame (2-2, 0-1 MEC) raced back to get within 84-81 of Concord with 51 seconds left.

Following a CU missed jumper, the Falcons had a chance to get within one point or tie the game, but the Mountain Lions forced a turnover to stall the late NDC rally. May and sophomore guard Keely Lundy each connected on two free throws in the final seconds for the final margin of victory.

The game featured 10 ties and 19 lead changes, but Concord led at the end of each quarter. Boothe hit one of her three three-pointers at the end of the first quarter to give Concord a 22-18 lead after 10 minutes.

The Mountain Lions grew their lead to seven, 49-42, at halftime. And despite being outscored by six in the third quarter, May's layup with four seconds left in the third period gave the Maroon and Gray a 61-60 edge going to the fourth quarter.

May poured in a game-high 27 points as she went a perfect 9-for-9 at the foul line, and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Off the bench, Fitzwater added 22 points on 11-for-12 shooting while pulling seven of her own rebounds.

Pool went for 18 points. Boothe notched 12 point, seven rebounds and a team-high five assists.

As a team, CU hit 7-of-14 attempts from three-point range. Boothe and Pool hit three three-pointers each while Lundy added a first-quarter make from beyond the arc.

The Mountain Lions welcome in Urbana to the Carter Center 1:00 p.m. Monday.
