ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University volleyball team begins a five-match home stand when it welcomes West Virginia State to the Carter Center 7:00 p.m. Wednesday followed by matches against Shepherd 7:00 p.m. Friday and Fairmont State 1:00 p.m. Saturday.Â

The Mountain Lions enter the week with a mark of 4-17 overall and 1-5 versus conference foes.Â

West Virginia State is 16-7 in 2018 and 3-3 in the MEC. The Yellow Jackets play a non-conference match on Tuesday.Â

Shepherd has compiled a record of 15-5 overall and is tied for third in the MEC standings at 5-2.Â

Meanwhile, FSU 6-12 overall and 2-5 versus league competition.Â

CU plays just its sixth home game of the season when it hosts to West Virginia State Wednesday.Â

The Mountain Lions won their last home game on September 25 over UVa.-Wise as they took the match in three sets.Â

Concord's most recent matches came against Urbana and Notre Dame on the road in which CU fell in three sets in both instances.Â

Senior outside hitter
Ellie Lawrence had 18 combined kills in the two matches which is the third-most in any two-match stretch for Lawrence this season. Earlier in 2018, the Newport News, Virginia native had 24 kills against Ursuline and Ohio Dominican.Â

Additionally, Lawrence moved into 10
thplace in all-time percentage at CU at .183 with her performance away from home last week.Â

Erin Shannon notched 15 digs against Notre Dame which marked the 10
thtime this season Shannon has racked up at least 10 digs in a match. The Frankfort, Illinois native is nine digs away from reaching 1,300 for her career.Â

The last time the Mountain Lions played at the Carter Center they hit a season-high .378 versus UVa.-Wise. Senior middle hitter
Brooke Heck hit .615 in the match with nine kills while Lawrence also tallied nine kills with a .500 hitting percentage.Â

Concord split two matches with West Virginia State last season as each team won at home. CU edged the Yellow Jackets in four sets in the next-to-last match of the season in 2017.Â

Since the formation of the MEC in 2013, Concord has swept the season series from West Virginia State in the even-numbered years while the squads have split two matches in odd years.Â

Last season at home versus WVSU, Heck had 12 kills and five blocks while Lawrence chipped in seven kills and 12 digs.Â

In four career matches versus the Yellow Jackets, Shannon has 93 digs including 33 in a five-set road win for Concord in 2016.Â

In the 10-year tenure of head coach
Kate Dillon, the Mountain Lions have just one win over Shepherd and Fairmont State—a 2012 three-set win over Shepherd.Â

Two seasons ago when Concord matched up against SU at the Carter Center, the match went five sets with the Rams edging out a win.Â

For CU, Heck notched 12 kills while Shannon went for 23 digs.Â

The Yellow Jackets are guided by second-year head coach Kris Kern who has already surpassed last year's win total of 14. Two seasons ago, WVSU won just six matches before Kern took over.Â
