Two Goals from Elias Help Concord Get Past Wheeling Jesuit, 3-2

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team picked up a road victory at Wheeling Jesuit, 3-2, Sunday afternoon in a Mountain East Conference matchup at Bishop Schmitt Stadium.

CU improves to 6-3-2 on the season and 4-2-1 versus MEC foes while Wheeling Jesuit drops to 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the MEC with the setback.

Concord put five shots on goal in the first 25 minutes of the game, but Cardinals goalkeeper Asya Carney stopped all of them. Wheeling Jesuit would be the first team to score in the game—in the 27th minute—despite the Mountain Lions dominating possession and shots early on.

Carney stopped two more shots before sophomore midfielder Mira Kontio got a goal past the Wheeling Jesuit net minder on a crossed ball from freshman forward Leah Foster.

The Mountain Lions went into the halftime intermission tied at 1-1.

Two goals from senior forward Pilar Elias, two minutes apart in the second half, was all Concord needed to down the Cardinals. After a yellow card on Wheeling Jesuit, redshirt freshman midfielder Olivia Dougherty threaded a pass through the WJU defense—after the restart--onto the foot of Elias who shot past Carney in the lower left corner. The goal came in the 55th minute, and was also the first career point for Dougherty.

Just 72 seconds after her first goal, Elias headed in her seventh goal of the season off a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Courtney Wallace.

Wheeling Jesuit scored a goal with less than three minutes left in the game, but the Mountain Lions held off the comeback attempt from WJU to win by a goal.

CU outshot the Cardinals 28-16 in the contest and also had an advantage of 16-9 in shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Maher saved seven WJU attempts in the game.

Junior midfielder Delaney Crumblish, Elias, Dougherty and sophomore midfielder Sarah Hill all had two shots on goal for the Mountain Lions.

Concord welcomes Fairmont State to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Wednesday.
