ATHENS, W.Va. – Down 41-15 to start the fourth quarter, the Concord University football team scored 20 fourth-quarter points, but could not find the end zone for a fourth time in the final period as it lost 41-35 to Glenville State on Homecoming Saturday afternoon at Callaghan Stadium in Mountain East Conference play.
The Mountain Lions (1-5, 1-5 MEC) scored the first 15 points of the contest on touchdown rushes by freshman running back
Kris Copeland and sophomore wide receiver
Tywan Pearce in the first four minutes of the contest to open up a 15-0 lead for CU.
However, GSC (2-4, 2-3 MEC) responded with 41 unanswered points to grab a 41-15 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Sophomore wide receiver
Isaiah Bowman who toted the ball 13 times for 101 yards as a running back in the second half plunged into the end zone from a yard out with 14:14 left in the game to trim the deficit to 41-22.
On the ensuing kickoff, freshman defensive back
Davon Williams stripped the ball away from the Pioneers to set up the Mountain Lions with good field position at the Glenville State 18-yard line, but Concord was unable to capitalize with points.
After the CU defense forced a punt, Bowman ran 31 yards for a score to cap a short two-play drive and bring Concord within 41-28 of GSC with 9:54 remaining.
Just three plays after Bowman's rushing touchdown, sophomore linebacker
Alec Henderson tipped a pass to himself, intercepting the ball and racing 32 yards for a touchdown. After the defensive score, Concord trailed 41-35.
Down the stretch, the CU defense stayed strong by forcing another Glenville State punt. Down six with 6:20 left to play, the Mountain Lions marched down to the 29-yard line of GSC after sophomore quarterback
Adam Fulton connected on a 15-yard pass on third-and-16, setting up fourth-and-one with two minutes left to go. On the fourth-and-one play, a bad snap got away from Concord, forcing a turnover on downs.
The first two touchdowns of the day for Concord were created by good special teams and defensive plays. The 11-yard run by Pearce less than two minutes into the game came after senior defensive back
Chaudlier Shepherd returned 54 yards on a punt to the GSC 11-yard line.
Copeland's touchdown run came one play after junior defensive line
Ryan Gatrell scooped up a fumble and ran it back 35 yards to the Glenville State 15-yard line. The fumble was created by freshman defensive lineman
Jamal Shearin's sack.
Bowman's performance was his first career 100-yard rushing game as he added two touchdowns. Fulton had a stellar day punting as he got off four punts for an average of 49.0.
Sophomore defensive back
Jonathan Roebuck finished with a team-high nine tackles on the day. Henderson had five tackles to go along with his first career defensive touchdown.
The Mountain Lions play back-to-back road games starting with a trip to West Virginia State 1:00 p.m. October 13.
