Concord Tripped Up at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Concord University football team was unable to stop West Virginia State from scoring 31 unanswered points during the second and third quarters as it fell 52-24 at Lakin Field Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.

The Mountain Lions (1-6, 1-6 MEC) scored 10 first-quarter points. Freshman kicker Luke Walls capped an 11-play drive to open the game with a 29-yard field goal to put Concord up 3-0. However, less than three minutes after Walls' kick, WVSU (4-3, 3-3 MEC) answered with a touchdown.

Concord had the final points of an action-packed first quarter as sophomore wide receiver Tywan Pearce took a screen pass from sophomore quarterback Adam Fulton 40 yards for a score to leave CU with a 10-7 lead after the first quarter.

All 17 points in the second quarter belonged to the Yellow Jackets as they carried a 24-10 lead into halftime.

West Virginia State stretched its lead out to 38-10 with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter.

Freshman running back Kris Copeland scored a rushing touchdown for the second straight week as he bounced in the end zone on a 35-yard rush right after a 50-yard kickoff return by senior defensive back Chaudlier Shepherd

Pearce scored a second touchdown with eight minutes left in the contest for his first career multi-touchdown game through the air. It was also the first multi-touchdown passing game for Fulton since last season versus West Virginia State.

Fulton finished the game 14-for-20 for 156 yards and two touchdowns. Pearce caught five passes for a career-best 98 yards. Copeland added 86 yards on the ground on just 11 carries.

Senior linebacker Zach Malone went over 300 career tackles for his career with 14 stops on the afternoon. The Charleston, West Virginia native now has 308 tackles for his career.

Junior defensive lineman Ryan Gatrell had seven tackles to go along with his first sack of the season.

The Mountain Lions stay on the next weekend when they travel to UNC-Pembroke 4:00 p.m. next Saturday.
