Concord Advances to MEC Semifinals After Downing Charleston, 4-2

ATHENS, W.Va. – Playing each other for the second time in three days, the Concord University women's soccer team defeated Charleston 4-2 in the MEC Tournament's First Round at Anderson Field Tuesday afternoon.

CU (11-4-3) advances to take on Notre Dame 3:00 p.m. Friday in the semifinals at NDC.

The Mountain Lions staked themselves out to a 2-0 lead 25 minutes into the game after goals from sophomore midfielders Mira Kontio and Courtney Wallace.

Wallace scored in the 13th minute as she received a free kick from sophomore defender Alyssa Mahar near the far post of the goal mouth. Wallace struck the ball into the net for her ninth goal of the season. In the 23rd minute, Kontio headed a shot in for a goal after a corner kick from sophomore midfielder Yasmin Mosby.

Charleston (9-8-2) would score the first goal of the second half as MEC Defensive Player of the Year Marlee Coleman scored for the second straight game versus the Mountain Lions. But, just 18 seconds after Coleman's goal in the 53rd minute, freshman forward Leah Foster dribbled down the right side of the field and fired a shot past the UC goalkeeper to give Concord its two-goal advantage right back.

Foster was responsible for the next score in the contest as Mahar collected her second assist of the day. A free kick from 40 yards out found Foster who tapped in her second goal of the afternoon in the 70th minute.

The Golden Eagles scored two minutes later, but CU held Charleston without a shot over the final 18 minutes of the contest.

Foster tallied her first multi-goal game since her hat trick to open the season at King. Meanwhile, Wallace extended her consecutive games with a point to eight straight.

Foster took five of the 12 shots on the afternoon for Concord with four being on goal. The Mountain Lions held a 6-4 edge in shots on goal and a 12-8 advantage in total shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Maher made two saves in net.

Friday's meeting with Notre Dame will be the second straight season the teams have met in the MEC Semifinals.
