SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Sophomore midfielder
Yasmin Mosby's goal in the 59
th minute was all the Concord University women's soccer team needed to get past Notre Dame, 1-0, in the Mountain East Conference Semifinal Round Friday afternoon at Mueller Field.
The Mountain Lions (12-4-3) advance to Sunday's MEC Championship Game where it will take on West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, West Virginia at Cebe Ross Field. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
With either team struggling to put together a consistent offensive attack over the first 58 minutes of the game, Mosby received a pass from the right sideline. Once receiving the pass, she was able to get away from an NDC (10-6-1) defender and launched a shot from the left angle that found the upper right corner of the net.
Directly after Mosby's goal, it appeared the Mountain Lions may double its lead quickly after a shot from senior forward
Pilar Elias went wide of the goal 40 seconds later. From there, CU clamped down on the Falcons defensively. The best chance for Notre Dame came in the 75
th minute when NDC's Norah Barns set a shot just past the goal mouth that would have tied the game.
The shot by Barnes with 15 minutes remaining was the final shot of the day for the Falcons as Concord limited Notre Dame to six total shots and three shots on goal as the back line defense of senior
Joanna Aiello, sophomore
Morgan Carmichael, sophomore
Alyssa Mahar and freshman
Leigh Wightman held NDC in check.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Maher stopped all three shots that came her way in the contest.
Concord had 11 shots on the afternoon and seven shots on goal. Freshman forward
Leah Foster and sophomore midfielder
Mira Kontio each had two while Carmichael, sophomore midfielder
Sarah Hill and Mosby each had one.
Sunday will be CU's first appearance in the MEC Championship and its first appearance in a conference title match since 2012.
