ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team was edged by West Virginia Wesleyan, 2-1, Thursday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.
The Bobcats (3-9-2, 3-9 MEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13
th minute as a ball deflected into the Concord (4-8-1, 4-6-1, MEC) net for an own goal after a corner kick from WVWC. It appeared the Mountain Lions would tie the game in the 27
th minute after freshman midfielder
Jakob Dorn struck the ball from the left corner of the penalty area, but the shot went wide right.
CU trailed 1-0 at halftime after tallying one shot on goal in the first half—a fifth-minute attempt by freshman forward
Daniel Culverwell.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Mountain Lions tied the game as junior forward
Max Suckel drew a foul inside the penalty area. Junior defender
Josh Sheffield buried the ensuing penalty kick in the 54
th minute for his fourth goal of the season.
The deadlock would be short lived as Wesleyan caused a Concord turnover and the Bobcats took advantage by scoring in the 61
st minute to go up 2-1.
CU had two good opportunities late in the game as sophomore midfielder
Maxime Ramioulle's header in the 68
th was high of the target. Sophomore
Moulay Hassani fired a shot in the 81
st minute that was just pushed over the cross bar by the WVWC goalkeeper.
Wesleyan held an 18-10 advantage in total shot and a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Four different Mountain Lions accounted for the shots on goal.
