ATHENS, W.Va. – The Concord University men's soccer team lost a 1-0 contest to Wheeling Jesuit Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference play at Anderson Field.
Both teams could not find offensive consistency in the first half as there were only five shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. However, the teams did combine for 18 total shots in the first half with Wheeling Jesuit (9-4-2, 8-4 MEC) firing off 11 and CU (4-9-1, 4-7-1 MEC) going for another seven shots.
The best chance for the Mountain Lions in the first half came from freshman defender
Bruno Baptista in the 25
th minute as his header went wide of the goal after a Concord corner kick.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kyle Brown stopped four shots in the first half to preserve the scoreless draw at the intermission.
Early in the second half, sophomore midfielder
Maxime Ramioulle fired off a shot from the top of the penalty box that appeared to be heading for the goal, but the attempt was blocked down before it got to the net.
In the 60
th minute, CU had another opportunity as sophomore midfielder
Moulay Hassani's chance clanged off the left post.
Despite the chances, it was WJU that broke through with a goal in the 73
rd minute after Wheeling Jesuit's Martin Minuzzi got behind the Concord defense and found the back of the net.
Just two minutes after the Cardinals' goal, Baptista had a free kick saved—it was the only shot for the Mountain Lions after the Wheeling Jesuit goal.
Brown made a total of six saves in the contest. Baptista and junior forward
Max Suckel each had a shot on goal for Concord.
The Mountain Lions play at Urbana 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in their final conference road contest of 2018.
