WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Concord University women's soccer team netted the final two goals in a 2-1 win over West Liberty Sunday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action.
CU moves to 8-3-2 overall in 2018 and runs its MEC record to 6-2-1. WLU falls to 3-8-2 and 3-5-1 versus league foes.
The Hilltoppers got the scoring started with a goal in the sixth minute—their first lead versus Concord since the 2016 season. But six minutes later, sophomore midfielder
Courtney Wallace responded with her second goal in as many games. Wallace got tangled up with West Liberty goalkeeper Lauren Hartnell, but maintained composure to push her fifth goal of the season into the net.
Concord was held without a shot on goal over the final 30 minutes of the first half as both teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.
Sophomore midfielder
Mira Kontio matched Wallace with her fifth goal of the season less than three minutes into the second half. Kontio received a pass from fellow midfielder
Elisha Robinson and the shot deflected off Kontio's upper leg to propel CU out to a 2-1 lead.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Katie Maher made four of her five saves in the second half to preserve the Concord advantage.
Kontio and Wallace had the lone two shots on goal for CU. Despite getting outshot on shots on goal (6-2), the Mountain Lions owned a 9-7 edge in total shots. Wallace led Concord with three.
The Mountain Lions welcome West Virginia Wesleyan to Anderson Field 1:00 p.m. Thursday in an MEC South Division clash.
